Christmas After Dark: can a world bend?

A standalone Christmas single is a simple test of a world: does it have its own answer to the question of what Christmas looks like here, or does it simply put on a costume?

The song started with a much blunter working title. In the rewrite we looked for something that stayed mischievous and adult but gave the project more room, and it became Christmas After Dark. The mood is festive, not sentimental: raised glasses, lost coats, bad karaoke, late taxis.

Two things were taken out. One lyric line carried a predatory undertone that did not belong to Neon Shelter; the song could be rebellious and drunk, not that. The question was not whether the line was allowed, but whether this world wanted it.

The first visual direction went too luxurious, closer to a perfume advert than to a party that went on too long. The chosen image is the end of that party: half-empty glasses, a Santa hat over a chair, tinsel, ornaments, rain outside, magenta and gold, an anonymous figure in the background. The Neon Shelter light stayed.

The world did not dress up for Christmas. Christmas came to the world.
