The troubadour becomes the artist

Maerten was created to sing Diederik's praises. That brief quickly showed its limit. An artist whose every song celebrates one fictional lord turns into a propagandist, and every song circles the same power struggle.

So Maerten was allowed to leave. He travels beyond Huis Cok and sings about the people he meets. Diederik appears in some songs, but not as the hero of all of them.

The second decision was to make Maerten an unreliable narrator. He claims to have witnessed everything he sings about, and he was probably in a tavern for most of it. This gives room for humour, for contradictory versions of the same event, and for a world that doesn't have to be pinned down in every detail. That matters across several media, where strict continuity becomes a production burden.

We set a boundary right away. Ambiguity that Maerten creates on purpose is a creative device. A face that changes between two images because an image model cannot reproduce it is a production fault. One must never be used to excuse the other.

His biography rests on one line: "A travelling storyteller from a world that never quite existed, singing about people who always have." The biography is in English even though the songs are in Dutch, so that listeners abroad can place him. It mentions Diederik but does not depend on him. A new listener should understand Maerten without knowing anything about Huis Cok.

Maerten is presented openly as a fictional character. The aim is not to convince anyone that a fifteenth-century troubadour has a streaming profile. It is fiction you enjoy on its own terms, much like a novel.

That led to three levels of communication:

  • Maerten tells the stories on his own channels, without breaking the fourth wall.
  • The world lets people experience the fiction.
  • davidcok.nl and Amini Labs show how it is made.

The structure is layered: the world contains Huis Cok, Huis Cok contains Diederik, and Maerten moves through all of it independently. That leaves room for other characters to get their own projects later.
