Brief
Question. Can a single creator build and validate a commercially viable music venture from one original fictional universe?
Thesis. A coherent fictional world can carry several connected music products and audience experiences, and each new product built on it costs less to make and finds listeners more easily than a stand-alone release would.
What we are doing. The world is De Wereld van de Gulden Haan: a fictional lordship in the Burgundian Low Countries around 1450, with a lord (Diederik van Cok), his house (Huis Cok) and a rival. From it came a fictional travelling troubadour, Maerten Veelspraeck, who is the recording identity. His catalogue: a 13-song Dutch-language narrative album, Waar de Haan Waakt, and a six-track instrumental dance EP, Tot de Haan Kraait, planned for 18 December 2026. Around the music: cover art, short video concepts and a design for a live "court" at medieval events. One creative director; AI-assisted production.
How we will judge it.
- Production leverage: hours and iterations per approved track or asset go down for later products [THRESHOLD].
- Retention: saves, repeat listeners and follows per release [THRESHOLD].
- Crossover: the share of EP listeners who go on to the album [THRESHOLD], and listening outside the Dutch-speaking market, starting with Germany [THRESHOLD].
- Live: participation in a small pilot, and the share of participants who go on to the music [THRESHOLD].
- Economics: revenue minus variable and marketing costs, with founder hours recorded separately.
What would make us stop. If neither release earns meaningful repeat listening after a fair test [THRESHOLD], development pauses until we have a new hypothesis. If the world adds nothing measurable beyond the music alone, we simplify it.
Reports R01–R08 were written retrospectively in October 2026 from project notes. Later reports are written as they happen.

A lord, not a king
This experiment did not start with music. It started with a visit to a medieval event in the Netherlands, and a simple question: how do you take part instead of only watching?

Designing a live court, then taking the price tag off
Before there was any music, the world was meant to exist in person. Diederik would run a court, or chancery, at medieval events. Visitors could bring a dispute, and he would deliv…

The troubadour becomes the artist
Maerten was created to sing Diederik's praises. That brief quickly showed its limit. An artist whose every song celebrates one fictional lord turns into a propagandist, and e…

Finding the sound, and why the first method failed for songs
The first musical choice was between a historical reconstruction of fifteenth-century music and a contemporary interpretation of a fictional medieval world. We chose the second.

*Waar de Haan Waakt*: twelve songs, then thirteen
The album was widened from Diederik's story to the people Maerten meets: humour, travel, love, betrayal, courage, loss, exclusion and coming home. Its title is Waar de Haan W…

*Tot de Haan Kraait*: a production problem becomes a second product

Making the world visible, and where the tools fell short
The visual rule was historically flavoured fiction, not fantasy with medieval props. AI-generated medieval scenes tend to drift towards oversized castles, clothes that are too cle…
