Visualising doubt: Trust Machine

A dim archive room with shelves of records and papers, an open book on the table under a single hanging lamp

The third chapter, Trust Machine, is the point where the project grew up. Its subject is not simply disinformation, AI or propaganda, but a wider question: how does a person decide what deserves their trust? Tracks such as The First Crack, Signal // Noise, The Ministry of Maybe, Invisible Handshake, The AI Testifies, The Probability Engine and Trust Machine form one field of thought.

It also created a production problem. A song about steak is easy to picture (R01). How do you film doubt, or probability, or a system nobody personally runs?

For The First Crack the answer was a closed, industrial world of concrete, machinery and order, with a single crack in it. On the other side lies something that does not seem to fit the system. The image works because it does not explain what the truth is; it shows only the moment certainty stops being obvious.

For Invisible Handshake the obvious cliché was a secret society in hidden rooms. We rejected it. The more interesting idea is a system in which nobody fully holds the controls, yet interests, incentives, habits and institutions together still produce a direction. The visuals became more abstract: architecture, infrastructure, closed circuits, people moving inside a logic they never fully see. The project got stronger each time it refused a simple villain.

This changed what the videos are. They no longer had to illustrate lyrics; they could be associative film chapters. We began using the label Official Concept Video on purpose: no performer, no band, no narrative required. The video is an extra layer of interpretation, and the clips can be read as parts of one longer film.
